Re: CERRITO SPEAKEASY opens Wed Nov 1!
Thu, October 26, 2006 - 6:29 PMwhen I grew up, and when my parents grew up...the IT club was a speakeasy on the corner near the theater. They literally had "girly shows etc" In fact during its hey day they had a mens "club" type of entertainment there. next door was the happy hour, which was strictly a beer and wine bar.
performers such as Sally Rand etc...
my mom remembers being a little girl and trying to peak in the door to see Sally Rand during rehersals, but of course they wouldnt let her peak. They also had boxing on the oposite corner...
The It club had a cool sign, but alas was sold in the 70's and made into dentist offices.
I am glad that I grew up experiencing life during the 60's and 70's...
the younger generation really missed allot of cool and facinating things.

Re: CERRITO SPEAKEASY opens Wed Nov 1!
Mon, December 4, 2006 - 9:40 AMFinally made it to the new theater.
It is the same delicious menu (and I recognized a few of the staff) from the old Parkway. And the lobby (and bathrooms!) are immaculate.
My biggest complaint is that the theaters themselves are rather sterile--it doesn't have that "livingroom" feel of the old Parkway. And there definitely aren't enough couches.
It has been a bit since I've been to El Cerrito, and the 'hood is really changing...despite the issues they faced opening a second theater, I think their location and timing will prove to be a success. -

Re: CERRITO SPEAKEASY opens Wed Nov 1!
Wed, December 13, 2006 - 12:04 PMThe "living room" feel will develop as it becomes more, well, lived in. The Cerrito is basically brand spanking new, though the old art deco decor has been fully restored. What it lacks in funk it makes up for in class. Two different experiences, but hopefully both will have equal appeal over the long haul for different - and similar - reasons.
Cerrito has an elevator so both theaters are always wheelchair accessible. Plus there's lots of parking, heating and air conditioning, weekend classics, etc. The funk will come when you bring it! -

Re: CERRITO SPEAKEASY opens Wed Nov 1!
Wed, December 13, 2006 - 6:01 PMHi Tony...
at night there is probably more parking than in Oakland. In fact we were nervous about the fact EC doesnt exactly have allot of parking..
San Pablo Ave, and the side streets.
Anyway, I am glad we were able to save the theater. Keifer helped by only storing furniture all those years and not touching the walls.
Kind of cool the original canoe lighting on top, one was saved the other was rehabbed and repaired.
I think the whole thing brought tears to my moms eyes, since she was one of the original usherettes.
ANd the glass mirror in the entrance...original too....
THanks to all of you NEW speakeasy people for helping keep OLD ec going!! -

Welcome to the Neighborhood!
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 7:38 AMMy husband and I went to the theater for the first time the other night.
Fab! Love It! Love it! LOVE it!
The food is great, the atmosphere classy and comfortable. We saw For Your Consideration (one of the only couples w/no kids during Baby Brigade) and The Princess Bride.
Thanks for bringing this to our neighborhood and restoring a great old theater! We live in that little part of the Richmond Annex that should be El Cerrito and love the improvements happening around town.
