Article on the Cerrito Theater

Anyone have any thoughts on the SF Chronicle / SF Gate article, "Now playing in El Cerrito: a film experience for the whole family"?

From the article: "It's not in East Oakland, it's in the suburbs," says Kyle Fischer, who co-owns Speakeasy Theaters with his wife, Catherine. "They're not going to want to see the same things and they're not going to want the same funky experience (as the Parkway). It's going to be suburban funky. And that takes time to create."

I hope this doesn't mean that there's an assumption that everyone in E.C. likes things prim and proper. I've lived here for 6+ years and I think the area could use a little funky...

    please no....
I mean funky is okay..but I would never like to see the "city life" hit the streets in El Cerrito (born and raised)...
and its not really the suburbs...kind of funny they coined that. EC is now becoming a nice downtown area, that was lost, when they took out the plaza I grew up with...finally they are creating a nice and BUSY area. Very busy, too busy..
I live in Central Contra Costa County, now thats the burbs..

I didn't like the phrasology, but I understood what they were trying to convey.

Basically, they're trying to branch out to a new audience, one that doesn't find the Parkway's old couches or that neighborhood to be "charming."

So whatever generalities were being implied, there are always exceptions. I know folks in E.C. who prefer the Parkway over the E.C.

I understood as well. I think it may have been that line from the article, as well as comments made during the little filmed "Coming Soon" trailer that they played before a recent show at the Cerrito, that made me think that someone somewhere might be confusing El Cerrito with Piedmont or Lafayette.
